Last week the Lenten season began with Ash Wednesday. We had a wonderful service with the imposition of ashes and communion and it is always such a powerful service. I was able to play my English Horn during the imposition of ashes and it is something I look forward to every year.
The English Horn is a beautiful instrument with a deep, dark melancholy sound. It is definitely my favorite instrument to play. I left the service thanking God for blessing me with the gift of music, which started when I was 10 years old.
The season of Lent is so much more than “giving up” something for 40 days. Of course the idea of giving up something that is meaningful to you for that time would be that you are encouraged to think of what God gave us…Jesus. For the past few years I have added something to my Lenten journey. Intentional prayer, writing scriptures, and last year I wrote and mailed a card each day, and am doing that this year as well.
So often family and friends who we may have not spoken to in a very long time will cross our minds and we smile and remember good times. Then we move along with our day. This season I am taking a moment to stop and share with 40 people how they have impacted my life.
Whatever your Lenten practice this season, I encourage you to do more than “think” about those that cross your mind. Say a prayer for them, give them a call, let them know you appreciate them and love them.
