Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. The crisp air, crunchy leaves, the smell of fireplaces burning in the neighborhood, and the feast. From getting up at 5 am to get the turkey in the oven, to the nap in the afternoon…I love this holiday. I find myself thinking back to last year when I had lost my job. Honestly, my future did not look very bright. I was filled with uncertainty and doubt and a year later I give thanks to God for blessing me with more than I ever dreamed possible. This year has not exactly been easy, but the lessons I have learned have been tremendous.
I have been reminded that the most important things in my life involve the people closest to me. Not jobs or money, my family and friends. Seeing the true colors of some has been devastating, but I know that the ones who I hold close are most important. Words will hurt me, but holding on to the truth is what sustains me.
That truth is that the One who created me, the One who created us all is the most important. When I fail miserably in my spiritual walk, He is the one that has my hand throughout, no matter what. When I catch myself in a place that is filled with ugliness or doubt, God grabs me, gives me a little shake and reminds me, “Have I ever left you?”
I am working hard daily to live a joyful life. It’s not always easy, but when I look in the faces of my sons and husband, I have more than many have ever dreamed. My prayers to God are continual as I talk constantly to “myself,” which is really conversation with Him. Working to keep those words kind and compassionate is a challenge, but I keep trying. And most importantly I give thanks “in” all circumstances because no matter how dark the night is, there is always a light to hold on to. I give thanks in the midst of my struggles and challenges because I know that God is right there with me.
