I must say that there is nothing like flying at 30,000 feet and being away from everything. I do enjoy the flights that do not offer internet. It is a time where you are completely unplugged.
On my way home from a recent business trip I was flying early this morning, a quiet cabin, feeling the hum of the engines below my feet. A little girl and her grandmother were next to me on their way home to Denver from a special out of town get away (and I immediately missed my mother in law…she was that kind of Granny). Memories of Granny flooded me…the love she gave my boys…the adventures they would go on…and the attention she gave to each of them as if they were the only people in the world.
I turned on my iPad to listen to some music and my first selection made me smile. The “Overture to Die Fledermaus.” I was the student conductor for a production of Die Fledermaus my senior year in college (and my husband was on stage). It was a magical time…working with one of my all time favorite professors (Bob Linder) and making music with some amazing friends. It is a time embedded into my memory.
God was “showing off” a little bit to me on this Sunday morning. He gave me the opportunity to experience love and passion through my memories. I took the time to look around and remember how amazingly blessed I have been. I could have been sad…thinking about what could have been…what would have happened if I pursued my Master’s in Conducting? What would have happened if I had gone out of state to get that degree so many years ago?
I became a band director, married my college sweetheart (the love of my life), had a child with a chronic illness, changed careers and became a patient advocate, had another child with a chronic illness that has been more difficult than anything I have ever experienced in my life and have found a passion for speaking and ministry.
Isn’t life funny that way? We think and plan but God’s plans are perfect. I don’t have any regrets.
I have an amazing life and a heart filled with memories and experiences that will live with me forever.
Thanks be to God.
