I am so incredibly blessed to have had two wonderful parents who gave me solid examples of how to live and raise children.
Yes, I am my mother 🙂
How do people, who did not have strong parent role models, learn to be great parents?
What I know to be true is that my husband is one of those people without both parents in his life. He was the child of a single mother who lived with her parents (they helped to raise him). His only father figure was his grandfather. My husband has some good childhood memories, but he was not raised in a “conventional” home (but what is conventional?).
By all accounts, my husband, who never knew the truth about his father and did not have a “typical” father figure in his life should probably not be a great Dad. But let me tell you what…when God gets a hold of a person and transforms them and impacts their life and never lets go, there is no end to what that person can do.
My husband is the best Dad I’ve ever seen. Not a day goes by without him making my sons laugh! From crazy songs (and creative lyrics), jokes, hugs, a firm “No” and an open, non-judgmental ear…he is by far a man who loves and adores his children. A man who was always the first to change a diaper, take a day off during a busy week to be with a sick child, and helped our family navigate hemophilia in the early days of the diagnosis and can referee a difficult situation like no one else I know.
How I have been fortunate enough to have been blessed with this amazing man in my life is a mystery to me.
I thank God everyday for Joe MacDonald.
