There are so many things to give thanks for this season, but two very, special women have been on my heart. During my sophomore year in college, I moved from the dorms to the university apartments. I had one roommate that lasted only a short time and then I was alone, and I didn’t like it. I found out that two other music majors were looking for a roommate. I knew of them because they were a year ahead of me and didn’t think it would work out. It was one of the best things that ever happened to me.
I learned, at a private, Christian university, that Monday night at “Two Pesos” was dollar margarita night, that ladies night at “the Hippo” was tons of fun on a Tuesday, playing at “Munchies” for drinks was called “experience,” that laughing until I cried was a normal occurrence and all night music history cram sessions in Apartment 13 was routine. The most important thing I witnessed from these two, amazing women, was their passion for music. I mean, I loved music, but the way they experienced music was unlike anyone I had ever known.
Jennifer played the piano with a touch that was like no other. She brought the piano to life in a way I’ve not experienced since. When she accompanied me on numerous forums and recitals, there were moments when her, the piano, myself and my oboe were truly one. A piano player does not an accompanist make! She has always been one of the most sensitive, musical beings I’ve ever had the pleasure of making music with.
And then there was Charlotte, my wild, free spirited sister who sang like there was no tomorrow. And her passion! Not just about music, but about life! It was just infectious. Her round, black sunglasses, hair thrown up in a wild ponytail and red lipstick were part of her character. She was a very petite woman whose laugh would fill a room…I can hear her now and I tear up with happiness. And when she sang you were transported to a place that she made come alive. She is still my husband’s best friend and how blessed I am to have met him because of her.
So today I give thanks for the usual things that I definitely do not take for granted but I wanted to let Jennifer and Charlotte know that even all of these years later I think of them fondly with a smile on my face and warmth in my heart.
