There are hundreds of voices that we hear every day.
- The local news that repeats the same stories over and over again.
- The constant chatter of people on their cell phones in the doctor’s waiting room giving us details of their lives we would rather not know.
- In our homes, “What’s for dinner? When will you be home? Would you put clothes in the dryer… please?”
- At work, “The conference call starts at 2 Central! Did your committee meet? How could you do that? Your work is not good enough.”
All of those voices, and the hundreds more that we cannot escape, often plant seeds of doubt and anger in our hearts. Those voices will keep replaying in our minds and we listen to them over and over again until we begin to believe the ugliness and untruths that they spew. Funny thing is that those people who spew hate and want to hurt you profess to be followers of Christ.
I have said many times before that the person we talk to the most is ourselves. But the truth is, we are talking to the One who created us. He knows our hearts, our desires and our hurts. But we don’t listen to that voice nearly enough. If we would drown out the naysayers and hateful voices with that still, small voice that never leaves us, we would leave a lot of heartbreak behind.
I am going to be more intentional about the voices I listen to. There will be days that I hear the wrong things and will hang on to them, but I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that I am God’s Beloved…and so are you.
