When my Caeleb was in the hospital more than at home and in a wheelchair all of the time, I found that a lot of people did not say much to me about their struggles.  And as the wife of a pastor, many people will confide in me (and I am blessed because they see me as a safe place).    During that period of time they often felt like they had nothing to complain about because my situation was “worse” than theirs.

Isn’t that the truth?  When we have problems in our lives, no matter how big or small, we will often compare our situation to others and end up thinking, “My problems are nothing compared to yours.”  Beloved, you cannot think that way.   Yes, if we compare our issues to others, there is always someone in a worse situation.  We are not here to compare.  When we have a struggle it is very real in our lives.

Maybe you are horribly sick with the flu and are miserable.  It keeps you from work and you feel awful.  No, you are not in as bad of shape as someone with cancer, but for you it is significant.  Any time someone says, “Now my situation is not as bad as yours…..”  I immediately stop them and tell them that their problems and lives are just as important as mine.  It is good to put perspective on your issues, but don’t diminish them.

I am dismissing my issues lately.  Hemophilia is under control for now, but my physical pain is getting in my way.  Fortunately I am seeing a neurosurgeon on Friday, March 11th.  I’ve been waiting for this appointment for over two months and look forward to the possibility of having my neck issues treated.  Living with this pain for the past two years has definitely given me perspective for how others live with chronic pain.  My best friend has lived in chronic pain for at least 13 years.  I never understood what she went through until the past year when my pain has been at its worst.  No, my situation is not as critical as hers but it is definitely significant for me.  And it has also given me perspective on how my ten year old lives with pain.

I didn’t get it until now.

Father, God I thank you for opening my eyes and shining some healthy perspective into my life. I know that we all go through times of struggle and suffering for many reasons.  I give everything up to you, Father , and pray for those who are suffering and struggling.”  Amen.
