I have nothing but great memories from my college days. Attending a small, Christian university exposed me to more life than my little sheltered world in Galena Park, Texas ever did. I learned about different faith traditions, explored my passion for music, and met some amazing people. Charlotte, was one of them. She was one of my roommates in Apartment 13, and let me tell you what, that apartment taught me a lot about life 🙂 I’d never known anyone like Charlotte. What you saw was what you got…not an ounce of pretension. Her big, Texas hair, round or cat eye sunglasses and eclectic wardrobe made her sparkle. But she could wear a burlap sack and sparkle. I’d never known anyone to love as passionately as Charlotte…and she would let you know it in an instant.
We made music together, I listened and learned a new appreciation for classical, vocal music (she was a vocal major) and going out on a Tuesday night (ladies night at the “Hippo”) and showing up for 8 am theory on Wednesday was routine. Best of all, she introduced me to her best friend…my husband. Charlotte and I have laughed, loved and grieved together for over 25 years and when I went on a business trip to Florida, I had the chance to have a bagel and coffee with her that lasted for over three hours.
She walked into the hotel lobby with a cute, short knit dress, gladiator sandals that laced up to her knees and purple and blue hair that was beautiful. She looked gorgeous. We saw each other, and hugged and I fell into the warmth of her embrace that wrapped me in this amazing love that only someone who knows where your secrets are buried, can love. Neither of us wanted to let go and we were speechless for a bit.
After our visit, my soul was revived as I caught up, in the flesh, with my beautiful friend. My friend who sees my heart and soul. She doesn’t see the physical body that has changed so much over the years, just the depths of my heart.
If I had never moved into Apartment 13 I may have never met my husband. Funny how God puts people in our path. We never know what will change the course of our lives…a good decision made out of practicality or a bad decision made out of fear; turning right instead of left or fighting your introverted self to walk into a room of strangers.
There is no such thing as a coincidence. I believe it’s just God working in our lives. And if we are listening, sometimes the blessings are overwhelming.
I am a blessed woman to have crossed paths with Charlotte. My life would definitely not be as rich and beautiful as it if not for her love and friendship.
I love you, Charlotte.
