Yes, I am an introvert. Why am I called to be a public speaker and pastor? I think it’s just a way God gets a good chuckle. But despite being a person who is happy at home without making plans to go out and do things often, I find that even my introverted self is missing connection. I am grateful to have a “date” with four people on Wednesday evenings to record our Sunday services, and through this quarantine I am realizing just how much I miss the fellowship of others…especially on Sunday mornings at church.
It’s the little things. A simple smile and hello. A friendly hug or someone reaching out in a conversation and touching my shoulder. Those little moments add up and when they are gone it is really noticeable. I’ve definitely had my share of Zoom calls and have enjoyed the technology because I have reconnected with my group of women friends in Albuquerque. They meet every Thursday evening and I have missed them the past two years. It has made my heart happy to see their beautiful faces.
I am making it a priority to reach out during this time of quarantine. Every day I either make a phone call, send a text or email or even send a handwritten note in the mail. By the way, handwritten notes never go out of style. But I don’t want to only do this during this season of COVID-19, I want to keep this going as part of my daily life. I would even dare call it a spiritual practice. It gets me out of my comfort zone and every time I finish my conversation or receive a response, I feel so much better than I did before. And I know the person I should reach out to that day because God gives me a great big nudge and I answer.
What kind of practice can you add to your days as we work to stop the spread of this virus?
Today I Am Thankful For:
- 2 miles at the track
- the most perfect weather for an early Spring day
- the hum of the washer and dryer
- the smell of extremely garlicky chicken in my oven
- a spunky, happy dog
