My husband is leading a Sunday night book study, When Bad Things Happen to Good People by Rabbi Harry Kushner. I love this book. We have only gotten through the first chapter and I appreciate all of the points and perspectives Rabbi Kushner brings to the table.
Our group is wonderful because everyone is so open to share. Not everyone thinks along the same lines, and it definitely makes for great conversation. My husband had to miss class tonight and he asked me to lead. With this only being our third session, I wasn’t sure what he wanted me to do with the class.
“Hope,” he said without hesitation. “You are an expert in hope.”
I found it funny that he said that. Me, the girl who used to look at everything as “half-empty” has ended up living life with a glass that is always, at least, half-filled but usually overflowing with joy and blessings.
Holding on to hope is tricky. It’s not always easy when things are in chaos. What I have learned is that when your faith is deeply rooted and a part of who you truly are, hope shows up in beautiful ways. The nurse who anticipates your needs, the person at the coffee shop who buys your coffee when you are in a rush, the woman who brings dinner to you when you are sick… Hope is something you hold on to during the bad times and can appear in the most beautiful of ways…through Christ’s servants…his hands and feet.
I want to desperately be used by Christ. I pray that I am open to feeling that nudge on my heart to serve.
