I had the privilege of preaching in my home church this morning. During my study over the week, I spent time with Psalm 119:33-40. I don’t know why I’ve not studied this portion before. It has really hit my heart this week.

Psalm 119:33-40 (MSG)

God, teach me lessons for living

    so I can stay the course.

Give me insight so I can do what you tell me—

    my whole life one long, obedient response.

Guide me down the road of your commandments;

    I love traveling this freeway!

Give me a bent for your words of wisdom,

    and not for piling up loot.

Divert my eyes from toys and trinkets,

    invigorate me on the pilgrim way.

Affirm your promises to me—

    promises made to all who fear you.

Deflect the harsh words of my critics—

    but what you say is always so good.

See how hungry I am for your counsel;

    preserve my life through your righteous ways!

The psalmist is pleading with God to help him.

“Teach me, give me insight, guide me, give me a bent for your words, divert my eyes, affirm your promises to me, deflect the harsh words of my critics, see how hungry I am for your counsel.”

When I am desperately wanting and needing to be in communion with God, I don’t always have the words. I get lost, not know what scriptures or prayers to turn to and will often just let my relationship with Him suffer. But this psalm was written for me, and you.

“I am hungry for your words, Father, I long to follow you.”

As I start my journey at seminary, I know I will be overwhelmed. And when I feel like I have made a mistake or am not “enough,” I am going to read the words of this psalm to connect with the One who knows the desires of my heart.
