The Advent season begins four Sunday’s before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. It is the beginning of the liturgical year for Christians and is the time Christians prepare and anticipate the birth of Christ.
When the first Sunday of Advent arrives, I feel like the holiday season has officially begun. I see Christmas decorations out in stores during October and it makes me a little crazy! And let’s not forget the awful renditions of holiday music that is played in stores and on the radio. I will admit that I am a “musical snob” and enjoy traditional music (classical holiday music in particular) so hearing the various versions of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” gets old quick 🙂
I love tradition. I love celebrating the season with meaning. For me, that means more than snowmen and Santa. I want to remember the true meaning of the season… the celebration of the birth of Jesus. I do love decorations and lights and the fun aspect of the holiday season, but remembering the birth of Christ sometimes hits me only on Christmas Eve.
This year I will be more diligent in my preparation for the birth of Christ. I don’t want to get to the candle lighting service on Christmas Eve realizing I have been wrapped up in shopping, snowmen and reindeer. This season I will try to read a daily Advent devotional and even write out scripture. I know I won’t be perfect, but I want to try and celebrate the entire season and not just on Christmas Eve.
