I’ve caught myself being a little sad this season as my mighty, seven year old warrior is currently in the hospital  Being in the hospital is never fun, especially when you are waiting for Santa 🙂

I wanted to cook a big, Christmas dinner, go out to see the Christmas lights and luminarias in the nearby neighborhoods and bake way too many cookies.  But this season would be about getting presents for the kids, finding a place to order take out for Christmas lunch and finding a way to make the best of a yucky situation.

And it took my seven year old to remind me about the true spirit of the holiday season.

A little boy in the room next door has been hospitalized for over three months.  We seem to see him every time we are admitted and sadly he often alone.  He must be about 10 years old.  As I was walking into my son’s room with bags of presents, I found out that he only had two presents from Santa.  I went into my little boy’s room and before he even had the chance to see the “loot” I had brought in, I told him about his little neighbor and without hesitation he reached under his little tree and picked out two presents from Santa to give to his neighbor.  “Mommy, he needs some more Christmas.”

And you know what?  This is one of the best Christmas Day’s I’ve ever had.  We were all together, not spread out through our home, watching movies, eating take out and enjoying each other.

My little one is healing and despite what his physical situation is, his heart takes over.
