Friday night our women’s ministry held an event at our church. The program was filled with several women who shared their faith journey. It was absolutely amazing.
Four women of all ages stood in front of our group and opened their hearts sharing their struggles and joys of what their life used to look like before they knew Christ and how their lives are now as they live their lives with Christ as an integral part of their world. As each woman stood up to share their story, you could feel the love and acceptance throughout the room. Every one of us identified in one way or another with each woman. From struggles in finding a relationship with Christ after being young and leaving the church to a woman who shared her story of coming out and has lived a truly inspiring life by working in the church and helping children who are desperately in need of being loved.
There was not a soul judging the choices and lifestyles of any of these women. We were all behind them, cheering them on as they shared their love for Christ.
Everyone has a story. Sometimes we have no idea what kind of world exists behind the door of a person’s home. On the outside it may be a huge, two story home with a perfectly manicured lawn, with its inhabitants dressed in the finest clothes. But behind the door may loom sadness and loss, financial ruin and doubt. Maybe even abuse. Then there is the little shack with holes in the roof, peeling paint and a yard filled with weeds and dirt. You may be surprised that behind the door of the ramshackle home is a roaring fire with soup on the stove and more love than any one person can possess.
Appearances can be deceiving.
We have no idea what people deal with every day. This week I am going to make a special effort to remember that every person I come in contact with may come from a world that may be very different from my own. It may be the worst day of their life and I want to make sure that I am treating people with kindness and compassion.
You just never know what kind of struggle someone is battling.
“Father, today I pray to show grace and compassion to others. That my heart is open and forgiving and that my words are used to build up and not tear down.” Amen.
