Is it really December? I have decorated my home, I’m listening to Christmas music and when there is a craft show I am one of the first ones in line, but how did the year go so quickly? Before our move in June I never imagined that December would come. It seemed a distant place…so far away that dreaming about it was painful. Last Christmas was filled with sorrow. It was all I could do to get the tree decorated and I could not take it down fast enough.
But Christmas is festive, happy and fun! How could such a wonderful holiday be filled with sadness? When you have little children who believe in Santa, it is hard to not see the magic and wonder of the season through their eyes, but when life is ugly, not even the merriment of the season can erase the hatefulness of some. I think of the people who live alone with family far away, or no family at all. The people who suffer from illnesses that keep them bedbound with their illness being top priority. Those who have lost loved ones and are experiencing the holiday for the first time without them. And the children who live in foster care, struggling to find “home.”
There are so many souls in our world who need comfort. Some of these souls may be right next door. They may be the person at the cash register, stocking the shelves or greeting you at the bank with a smile for the world and insides filled with pain. Take a moment this season to be mindful of their needs. If we can bring joy into a person’s life for just a moment, then our time will have been well spent.
How will you be a blessing to the next person you see in your day?
