Two years ago, I was ordained as a Deacon in the United Methodist Church. It was one of the most powerful and significant moments of my life. I just returned from the New Mexico Annual Conference of the UMC and had some moments that brought me back to my ordination. Being in the presence of fellow clergy and sharing stories and struggles is cathartic. These moments remind us that we are not alone in this work of ministry. It is hardly glamorous, but my colleagues and I are called to something set apart. We are invited into lives where we witness devastation and grief…loss and hopelessness…death and life. We are invited into a journey with others and help them carry their sadness and revel in their joy.

As an ordained Deacon, I am committed to serving within and beyond the church walls. Deacons are ordained to Word, Service, Justice, and Compassion, and I am blessed to serve alongside a group of Deacons in the New Mexico Conference who humble me with their work. We come from different walks of life, and our ministry settings are very different. From hospice and schools to non-profits and hospitals, we are meeting people where they are and shining the light that Christ has put in our hearts.

2026 marks the 70th Anniversary of the Ordination of Women in the United Methodist Church as well as the 30th Anniversary of the Ordination of Deacons. I am proud to be part of the legacy of women who have answered God’s calling to serve.

Today I am thankful for:
