“Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift.” Ephesians 4:20 (MSG)
When we moved to New Mexico seven years ago one of my first memories in the church office stuck with me. I was standing next to the church secretary (a lovely person) and a church member came into the office. She tore into the secretary! She was upset because some church archive information was not submitted. The secretary never lost her composure, had a smile on her face and did not react. This kind of behavior happens all the time, even at church. I was amazed at how the secretary handled the situation.
The truth is, we all have used ugly words to people at some point in our lives and I find that 99% of the time I use those ugly words on myself. That inner “self-talk” leaves me black and blue…I would never talk to another person the way I talk to myself. (I can’t even type out the things I say to myself…)
I am the first person to look into someone’s eyes and tell them that are a masterpiece created by God…that no one in the world is like them and that God loves them just like they are right at this moment. I believe that…no doubt…so why can’t I believe it for myself?
The enemy knows our weaknesses…
- Not feeling good enough to be loved because of our past mistakes/relationships.
- Not having confidence in our daily work…that it’s never good enough.
- Not being thin enough.
- Not being capable of trying new things.
This yucky negative self-talk will eat us alive if we let it.
It’s time for some change! Join me in making positive self-talk a priority.
