I celebrated Mother’s Day a little early this year. We met up with Julian on Saturday and spent the day shopping, talking and having a meal together. No one was rushing, we were taking our time and enjoyed each other’s company. It was a great day. I insisted on the usual Mother’s Day picture with my boys and I must say, it is one of my favorites, but it wasn’t until late that evening that I realized why.

This time last year we were preparing to move from New Mexico to Texas for my husband’s new pastoral appointment. We were miserable and looking forward to the move. It’s hard for me to believe that we have not been here in Farwell for a year quite yet. But when I looked at the picture, I was stunned. I saw someone I had not seen in years. I saw a person who looks as if the weight of the world is off her shoulders. She is at peace. She is happy.

I almost didn’t recognize myself.

Yes, I’ve lost quite a bit of weight and my health is better than it has been in years, but the “weight” of what I was carrying in my heart, the pain and despair that were eating me alive were no longer visible. For the first time in longer than I can remember, I am just stinkin’ happy.

I know that my mom must be thrilled as she continues to watch over me as she sits with the Divine. I only hope she is proud of me and my family. I have so much left to do in this world, and for the first time in a long time, I am looking forward to what is yet to come.

Praise to you, Almighty God, Creator of the Universe. You know our hearts and deepest desires and you never leave us.  I give thanks to you for loving me and blessing me abundantly. Amen.
