A week away in classes is a luxury when you are in an online/hybrid Master’s program. I love going to Denver to see my cohort; friends from across the country who have aspirations of becoming ordained in their various denominations, to be chaplains in various settings and some of us who are still undetermined about their life after the degree. Being in residence with these amazing people recharges my soul. And being “live” in class with professors brings the course content to life. It is a wonderful time.

But as an introvert, it is also draining. Being away from routine for an entire week is also draining. I miss routine. And to make matters worse, I had a speaking engagement this morning in Vermont. I left class on Saturday and flew across the country to speak to couples in the bleeding disorder world. It is always worth the time and travel away, however my plans did not go as planned. Due to a flight crew issue, my return flight was cancelled and I was forced to stay put for an additional day.

To be “forced” to stay in Vermont is not exactly a bad thing. I ventured out to the Bierhall for an amazing lunch, came back to the lodge to do some writing, and then I realized I was exhausted. The kind of exhausted you get where you can barely pick your feet up. I went back to my room and took a two-hour nap. I didn’t realize how much I needed that rest.

Instead of forcing myself to keep working on schoolwork, I opted to rest. My body and mind needed time to recharge. It will make my time at home even more productive. And being alone without my family is never easy for me. I am much better with my husband by my side.

I will enjoy the rest of my unscheduled time away and know that it is a gift. Not a gift that I am away from my beloved family, but a gift of time where I may rest and contemplate the week I have had in Denver and Vermont.

You never know when those blessings will come and sweep you off your feet. I’m glad to have been swept up today.

Today I Am Thankful For:

  3. Long naps
  4. Freshly cut flowers
